Facet syndrome, an inflammation of the facet joints, is a common spinal disorder. The facets are the boney “wing”-like portions of the vertebrae and align with the facets above and below. Where they meet, there are small ligaments. The job of the facets is to help guide the spine. When there is a loss in disc height, there can be added pressure on the facets which can break down the ligaments and cause inflammation in that area as well. Over time, there can be a loss of motion and breakdown of the facet cartilage. It results in pain and stiffness. This condition is often accompanied by degenerative disc disease.
